Prostate cancer is the growth of malignant cells in the prostate, walnut-size gland located just below the bladder in men, which produces about 30 percent of the fluid portion of semen.prostate cancer is common: Men have a lifetime chance of between one in 10 and one in 13 of developing the disease. It is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer and the second leading cause of male cancer deaths. Indeed, autopsy studies have shown that 60 to 70 percent of all men who reach the age of 80 have at least some microscopic evidence of prostate cancer. Symptoms do not occur until the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, highlighting the importance of regular checkups.

Because prostate cancer tends to grow very slowly and takes years to spread, immediate and aggressive treatment may not be advised in older men. For such patients a diagnosis of prostate cancer may warrant a strategy of watchful waiting. This involves regular examinations and bloods tests, but treatment is undertaken only if evidence indicates tumor growth. The specific treatment plan depends upon a number of factors: the patients age, the characteristics of the cancerous cells, the size of the tumor, whether cancer appears to have spread to other sites, and the risk of complications. Prostate cancer may be cured by removing the prostate gland before the cancer has spread. However, much controversy prevails about when to advise surgery because it is not possible to predict which cancers will spread and which will not. There is no cure once the cancer has spread beyond the prostate according to conventional medicine but it is being defied by alternative and homeopathic treatments. In some cases though, prostate cancer never spreads, and in general, the outlook is good when the cancer is detected early.

Esophageal Cancer – Prevention And Treatment

Esophageal cancer is the growth of malignant cells in the esophagus, the passageway from the throat to the stomach. An esophageal tumor blocks the passage of food to the stomach, erodes the esophageal lining, causes bleeding, and contributes to the development of fistulas (abnormal channels between normally separate organs) between the esophagus and the trachea (the major airway to the lungs). Although uncommon, esophageal tumors worsen rapidly: by the time symptoms develop, the outlook is poor. Esophageal cancer affects men more frequently than women. It occurs most often in those over age 50. Although a cure may be attempted when the cancer is detected at an early stage, treatment is generally aimed at relieving symptoms and making the patient as comfortable as possible.

Prevention

Do not smoke and have no more than two alcoholic beverages a day.

Treatment

  • Painkillers and tranquilizers are prescribed to relieve pain and anxiety.

The development of arthritis brings many older people much distress. Anyone can get Arthritis. It is just one of over one hundred and seventy types of rheumatic diseases which include many types of arthritis, gout, carpal tunnel syndrome, lupus, bursitis, juvenile arthritis, Kawasaki Syndrome, fibromyalgia, and many more. These diseases are known to affect one of any joints found in the human body.

Types of Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis can develop relatively quickly: in weeks as opposed to the years it takes for osteoarthritis. It is an irreversible autoimmune disease, a condition where the body’s own immune system attacks specific cells in the joints. It often starts in younger people and ultimately results in the breakdown of bone.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Cartilage between the bones gradually wastes away and this can lead to painful rubbing of bone on bone in the joints. It may also cause joints to fall out of their natural positions (misalignment). The most frequently affected joints are in the hands, spine, knees and hips. Osteoarthritis mostly affects people aged between 40 and 60; it grows more common with age. Around 12% of people over 65 are affected.

Pseudogout is a form of arthritis that occurs when a particular type of calcium crystal accumulates in the joints. As more of these crystals are deposited in the affected joint, they can cause a reaction that leads to severe pain and swelling. The swelling can be either short-term or long-term and occurs most frequently in the knee, although it can also affect the wrist, shoulder, ankle, elbow, or hand. The pain caused by pseudogout is sometimes so excruciating that it can incapacitate someone for days.

Psoriatic arthritis is a complication of psoriasis, a chronic skin disease that is characterized by bright pink or salmon-colored scales covering the knees, elbows, chest, back, or scalp. While most people with psoriasis do not develop arthritis, around 15% do. About 75% of people develop psoriatic arthritis only after the skin condition appears, although in some people the arthritis occurs before the skin condition.

Symptoms

Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can range in severity, varying a great deal from person to person.

People with rheumatoid arthritis may have a mild course, occasional flare-ups with long periods of remission without disease, or a steadily progressive disease, which may be slow or rapid. Rheumatoid arthritis may start suddenly, with many joints becoming inflamed at the same time. More often, it starts subtly, gradually affecting different joints. Usually, the inflammation is symmetric, with joints on both sides of the body affected.

Symptoms can include:

1.loss of appetite and generally feeling unwell (early symptoms),
2.Aching/ throbbing pain in the affected joints, which may come and go. This is often worse after a nights sleep and after sitting for a while. Exercise usually helps to reduce the pain,
3.The affected joints often feel stiff. Again this often improves once you start moving around; early morning stiffness is a characteristic of joint inflammation.

Classification:Cancers are classified by the type of cell that the tumor resembles and is therefore presumed to be the origin of the tumor. These types include:

  • Carcinoma: Cancer derived from epithelial cells.This group includes many of the most common cancers, including those of the breast,prostate, lung and colon.
  • Sarcoma: Cancer derived from connective tissue, or mesenchymal cells.
  • Lymphoma and leukemia: Cancer derived from hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells
  • Germ cell tumor: Cancer derived from pluripotent cells. In adults these are most often found in the testicle and ovary, but are more common in babies and young children.
  • Blastoma: Cancer derived from immature “precursor” or embryonic tissue. These are also commonest in children.

Cancers are usually named using -carcinoma, -sarcoma or -blastoma as a suffix, with the Latin or Greek word for the organ or tissue of origin as the root. For example, a cancer of the liver is called hepatocarcinoma; a cancer of fat cells is called a liposarcoma. For some common cancers, the English organ name is used. For example, the most common type of breast cancer is called ductal carcinoma of the breast.

Signs and symptoms:

Local symptoms: are restricted to the site of the primary cancer. They can include lumps or swelling (tumor), hemorrhage (bleeding from the skin, mouth or anus), ulceration and pain. Although local pain commonly occurs in advanced cancer, the initial swelling is often painless.

Metastatic symptoms: are due to the spread of cancer to other locations in the body. They can include enlarged lymph nodes (which can be felt or sometimes seen under the skin),hepatomegaly (enlarged liver) or splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) which can be felt in theabdomen, pain or fracture of affected bones, and neurological symptoms.

Mystemic symptoms: occur due to distant effects of the cancer that are not related to direct or metastatic spread. Some of these effects can include weight loss (poor appetite and cachexia),fatigue, excessive sweating (especially night sweats), anemia (low blood count) and other specific conditions termed paraneoplastic phenomena. These may be mediated byimmunological or hormonal signals from the cancer cells.

Causes: Cancers are primarily an environmental disease with 90-95% of cases attributed to environmental factors and 5-10% due to genetics.Environmental, as used by cancer researchers, means any cause that is not genetic.

Diet and exercise:Diet, physical inactivity, and obesity are related to approximately 30-35% of cancer cases.In the United States excess body weight is associated with the development of many types of cancer and is a factor in 14-20% of all cancer death.Physical inactivity is believed to contribute to cancer risk not only through its effect on body weight but also through negative effects on immune system and endocrine system.

Radiation can cause cancer in most parts of the body, in all animals, and at any age, although radiation-induced solid tumors usually take 10–15 years, and up to 40 years, to become clinically manifest, and radiation-induced leukemias typically require 2–10 years to appear.Some people, such as those with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome or retinoblastoma, are more susceptible than average to developing cancer from radiation exposure.Children and adolescents are twice as likely to develop radiation-induced leukemia as adults; radiation exposure before birth has ten times the effect. Ionizing radiation is not a particularly strong mutagen.Residential exposure to radon gas, for example, has similar cancer risks as passive smoking.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun can lead to melanoma and other skin malignancies.Clear evidence establishes ultraviolet radiation, especially the medium wave UVB, as the cause of most non-melanoma skin cancers, which are the most common forms of cancer in the world.Non-ionizing radio frequency radiation from mobile phones, electric power transmission, and other similar sources has also been proposed as a cause of cancer, but there is currently little established evidence of such a link.

Heredity:Less than 0.3% of the population are carriers of a genetic mutation which has a large effect on cancer risk.They cause less than 3-10% of all cancer.Some of these syndromes include:

  • certain inherited mutations in the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 with a more than 75% risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
  • tumors of various endocrine organs in multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN types 1, 2a, 2b)
  • Li-Fraumeni syndrome (various tumors such as osteosarcoma, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, brain tumors) due to mutations of p53
  • Turcot syndrome (brain tumors and colonic polyposis)
  • Familial adenomatous polyposis an inherited mutation of the APC gene that leads to early onset of colon carcinoma.
  • Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC, also known as Lynch syndrome) can include familial cases of colon cancer, uterine cancer, gastric cancer, and ovarian cancer, without a preponderance of colon polyps.
  • Retinoblastoma, when occurring in young children, is due to a hereditary mutation in the retinoblastoma gene.
  • Down syndrome patients, who have an extra chromosome 21, are known to develop malignancies such as leukemia and testicular cancer, though the reasons for this difference are not well understood.

Physical agents:Some substances cause cancer primarily through their physical, rather than chemical, effects on cells.A prominent example of this is prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous rock that causesmesothelioma, a type of lung cancer.Other substances in this category include both naturally occurring and synthetic asbestos-like fibers, such as wollastonite, attapulgite, glass wool, and rock wool, are believed to have similar effects.Nonfibrous particulate materials that cause cancer include powdered metallic cobalt and nickel, and crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, andtridymite).Usually, physical carcinogens must get inside the body (such as through inhaling tiny pieces) and require years of exposure to develop cancer.
